RAINBOW

Everyone deserves to feel safe, welcome and confident to participate in play, active recreation and sport

Supporting the Rainbow Community

It's important that rainbow, gender diverse, intersex and takatāpui individuals have access to quality, safe, and welcoming sport and active recreation experiences. You may also hear the term Rainbow used to encompass all of the LGBTQIA+ or Takatāpui population in New Zealand.

At Sport Northland, we believe in creating a safe and inclusive environment where all individuals, regardless of their gender identity or sexual orientation, can thrive and be their authentic selves whilst being active in play, active recreation and sport.

For information about inclusive access in our facilities, please see our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion page.

Rainbow is an umbrella term which refers to a diverse range of sexual orientations and gender identities. It can be inclusive of all individuals who do not conform to heteronormative or cisnormative expectations, if they choose to self-identify.

Intersex is a term used to describe individuals who are born with biological, anatomical, or chromosomal characteristics that do not fit typical definitions of male or female.

Gender diversity acknowledges that gender is not binary (male & female) and recognises that gender is a complex concept, encompassing a range of identities.

Takatāpui is a traditional Māori term meaning 'intimate companion of the same sex', which has been reclaimed to embrace all Māori who identify with diverse genders, sexualities or sex characteristics. Prior to colonisation, diverse sexual and gender identities were widely accepted and respected within Te Ao Māori.

It's time to upskill!
