INTERNSHIP PROGRAMME

Sport Northland Internship is an unpaid work experience programme that offers passionate, self-directed tertiary students and graduates the opportunity to develop skills and gain experience to complement their chosen career pathway within the sport sector of Northland.

The successful candidate will meet all application criteria, will be self-motivated and passionate about sport, with accompanying knowledge applicable to the sector and strong interpersonal skills that allow the individual to demonstrate confidence. The successful applicant will commit to an initial trial period of 1 month (hours per week to be discussed).

If the trial period is completed to the satisfaction of both parties then the internship will continue for another 11 months. All interns who successfully complete the 1 month trial period and induction are provided with a mentor to provide constructive feedback, advice, knowledge and effective learning opportunities working on appropriate projects. The role will be based predominantly at Sport Northland – Northland Sports House, Whangarei.

It is expected that interns are able to work both with a supervisor and independently within the organisation. As part of the internship programme there will be opportunity to develop a project to further promote a more active Northland and or Sport Northland.   

Intern opportunities are available through the following areas: Event Management, Exercise Prescription/Fitness Floor, Facility Management, Swim for Life and Green Prescription.

APPLICATION CRITERIA

To be considered for the internship role, you must:

  • Have a genuine interest in promoting community sport, events, health and fitness with Sport Northland.
  • Be a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident, or hold a valid work permit or study visa
  • Be either a full or part time student in a recognised university sport programme, or have graduated from a programme within the past 3 years
  • Possess outstanding written and oral communication skills
  • Be self-directed, motivated and able to commit to at least 8 hours+ (depending on the area of work) per week of unpaid work
  • Hold a full, clean NZ drivers licence and be willing to travel
