Paataka Kai o Kaikohekohe encourages people to donate fresh produce, healthy non-perishable food or other basic needs for others to take if they have run out of food. The sign that hangs off the shelves urges people to 'take a little if your cupboard is bare or give a little if you have food to spare'.

The project has been led by Lee Mason who is a member of the Kaikohe Seventh Day Adventist Church and was officially opened in the foyer of the Kaikohe Library by deputy Mayor Tania McInnes and children from Kaikohe East School.

The paataka kai intends to help people in Kaikohe with their physical and spiritual needs.  Lee goes onto explain that she is “grateful to the local businesses that donated shelves, food, and to the library for allowing the paataka kai in their foyer.  The response has been awesome, people really want to be able to help".

In addition to the paataka kai being set up, Kaikohe East School were donated citrus trees from Deputy Mayor Tania, Lee and Toro Mason for their school garden.
