Portable Pools Rely on the Good Will of the Community

The second portable pool is now back in circulation and servicing the Mid North schools coupled with the one servicing the Whangarei and Kaipara area.  The portable pools rotate around schools that do not have a school pool to allow students the opportunity to learn water safety and receive learn to swim lessons.

The pools are loaned to the schools, along with the delivery of the Top Energy WaterSafe and/or the Swim For Life programmes from Sport Northland for free.  Sport Northland is extremely grateful to have the assistance and support from local companies who without their continued assistance, the portable pools simply would not be available for schools to have access too.

TOLL New Zealand who have been moving these pools (which weigh about three tonne) from one school/Kura to another and have helped out massively with general maintenance of these well used pools during the summer school holidays.

The Northland Pool and Spa Company have been supporting these pools with discounted chemical rates for schools, servicing the pool plant equipment and providing their on call advice for schools.
Chilltech have continued to support with servicing and maintenance of the pools heat pumps.
The Department of Corrections in Whangarei, for providing the manpower to assist with the install and dismantle of the pools in the Whangarei and Kaipara area.

It also takes the school’s community to help with installing and dismantling these pools, especially in the Mid/Far North region.  It takes around 10 adults to install or dismantle a pool as there is some heavy lifting involved, a lot of parts to dismantle. Recently, Sport Northland Recreation staff assisted as part of a team bonding day in the dismantle of a pool based at Te Kura o Hata Hohepa Kamura where without their help, this pool would have taken all day to take down and pack away on the trailer.

Swim For Life Team Leader Louise Collings says “it is one of the conditions for the schools having a pool, to provide the assistance needed while the pool is located at their school, along with covering the costs for the chemicals and electricity in return for having the pool and free water safety instruction.  Both pools are owned by the Adam Brown Water Safety Trust under the banner of Pools in Schoolz and are on loan to Sport Northland who coordinate with the schools for the installation and dismantle of these pools, and for the delivery of the Northland Swim For Life Programme/Top Energy WaterSafe Programme. We are just one cog in the wheel to make these portable pools work, without the local communities help and support, there would be no portable pools so thank you to all the companies involved to date, you are helping to keep your communities safer in, on and around water”.
