The outstanding achievements of athletes in the Far North have been recognised at the FNDC Far North Sports Awards held at the Tuner Centre in Kerikeri on Friday evening.
Another fantastic year of achievements saw All Black, Jack Goodhue win the ASB Code award for rugby, followed by the Top Energy Sportsman of the Year and ultimately the FNDC Supreme Award. Jack was unable to attend the awards, but his Father Bernard Goodhue was present to accept the awards on his behalf.
Other award winners were Black Fern Te Kura Ngata Aerengamate for both the ASB Code award for Women’s Rugby and the Top Energy Sportswoman of the year. The ASB Junior Sportsperson of the Year was won by the talented Alex Edwards for her outstanding achievements in Spearfishing and the Tailored Legal Solutions Disabled Sportsperson to Alexander Goldsack for his achievements in Equestrian (Special Olympics).
The Fullers GreatSights Team of the Year went to the Herberts on Tour (Waka Ama) and the ThermaTech Junior Team of the Year, for a second year in a row, to Helena Sanderson and Jack Honey for their achievements in sailing.
A new addition to the awards this year was the Achievement Beyond Our Region Award which was won by James Fisher – Harris, Rugby League. The award recognises achievements by those that no longer live in the region however still consider the Far North home.
A number of sport volunteers were also recognised through the FNDC Contribution to Sport awards and the Ray White Service to Sport awards which recognises those who have given over 20 years’ service to sport.
The Far North District Council Far North Sports Awards is the premier awards evening for the Far North and was presented with 160 guests in attendance at the Tuner Centre Kerikeri. This year’s gifts of Kauri blocks were awarded to all major winners.
