Even though they are young, their enthusiasm to learn new dance moves is indicative that they have what it takes to become amazing performers. “With a strong Kapa Haka base, the tamariki at Hato Hohepa were quick to pick up dance moves and have great coordination” says He Oranga Poutama Kaiwhakahaere Horrace Maunsell.
The students put their learnings into practice by performing at the annual Cultural Festival which saw a cluster of six schools in the Whangaroa area (year 1-13) come to participate. This took place at Te Kura o Hato Hohepa te Kamura who were the hosts, in front of a crowd of around 300 spectators. The kaupapa for the festival focussed on giving tamariki/tai tamariki the opportunity to showcase both their newly found Hip Hop dance skills and Kapa Haka skills through waiata and haka, entertaining whanau from around the motu (area) and celebrating their culture and talent.
“The tamariki put on an awesome show entertaining whanau and community with tamariki from other schools dancing alongside them. Even the crowd participated in some dance moves. This was a great way to the end the year for Te Kura o Hato Hohepa te Kamura showcasing their talent, and I look forward to working with them in the new year - Ka pai to mahi kanikani” says Maunsell.
