In this latest round of applications submitted to the Kauri Club, six athletes from six sports codes have received grants to help them partake in competitions and events in their chosen sport/s.

Over $259,000 has now been allocated to talented Northland Sportspeople since the Kauri Club was formed in 2000.  The funding was received from the family of the late Garry Frew and the Brian Maunsell Memorial Trust fund, and the grants are aimed to assist talented up and coming athletes to help them achieve their sporting achievements and further their sporting pathway.

In this cohort of athletes, the funding will go mainly to assisting them to travel and participate in their upcoming national events – Kyren will be heading to the National Road Cycling Champs in Hokitika for his Para-Cycling event, Will Tattersfield is participating in the Maadi Cup in Twizel, Jessie Canty is participating in the Northern District training camps, Emilia Finer is heading off to Nationals and National Age Groups at various locations around NZ, Jayden Hudson-Owen is participating in the MTB Nationals in Invercargill and Jordyn Chapman is competing in the Squash Nationals in Christchurch.

“As a member of the Northland Sports Talent Development Panel, it is a rewarding experience to be able to make Grants to support some of the very talented youth athletes we have in Northland. These Grants give our youth athletes the opportunity to further enhance their talents and develop their athletic careers. We are very fortunate to have the funding from the Gary Frew and Brian Maunsell Memorial Trust’s, to assist the youth of Northland further their athletic careers” says George Goodhew.

Applications are assessed by the Northland Sports Talent Development Panel made up of representatives from the Far North, Kaipara, Whangarei Districts and Sport Northland.
